Many practical questions accompany a cancer diagnosis. Chai provides information about a wide range of services and benefits clients may be entitled to.

Advocacy and Advice

Chai Cancer Care provides information to help clients navigate the maze-like benefits system and apply for the services and support to which they may be entitled for example, a Blue Badge. Income will determine eligibility for some benefits from the NHS and local authorities, but others are not means tested and we can advise on these too. We’re also on hand with help to complete the often complex application forms required.

Chai can signpost clients to help with issues such as housing, debt and employment discrimination.

We advise on carer and nursing support, and residential and nursing home options. We also liaise with statutory agencies, multi-disciplinary teams, hospitals and hospices, for instance when care packages are being set up

We can refer you to specialist providers including palliative care teams, genetic services, voluntary and care agencies as well as practical patient aids such as hospital beds, wheelchairs and other living aids.

For clients wishing to travel, we can provide a list of companies to approach that offer insurance for pre-existing conditions.

Financial & Legal Guidance

There is often a financial impact surrounding a cancer diagnosis. We enable patients and families to discuss their concerns confidentially and can provide referrals to financial and legal experts. In some instances, the advice is free.

Image Resource Service

This is a service which provides cancer patients with a dedicated space where they can address, in confidence, sensitive image issues as a result of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Specialist advice is available on hair and wigs, underwear and clothes, nail care and semi-permanent make up. Clients can also book manicures and make up lessons. The service is currently available in London and Manchester only but telephone consultations are possible.

Jewish Perspectives on Cancer

Cancer patients and their families may have religious and/or spiritual issues and questions they want to explore. Chai can put clients in touch with Rabbis who are particularly sensitive to these needs, regardless of religious affiliation.

Medical Connections

Chai’s national and international medical connections are long-established through our eminent Medical Advisory Panel. We can signpost clients towards experts and centres of excellence specializing in different types of cancer.

Nutritional & Dietary Advice

Nutrition plays a vital role both in general health and during illness. Ensuring one is eating adequately with a good level of nourishment can play an important part in improving and helping maintain health during and post-treatment.

Chai’s dietician provides nutritional consultations with practical advice to help clients find the easiest ways to balance their diet. This includes an individualised and manageable eating plan, menu and recipes

Resources & Information

We have a programme of talks and Q&As that take place around the country to keep clients and the wider Jewish community informed of developments and current issues in the cancer world. We also publish an annual magazine, newsletters and updates on the website.
